Living in halls is about more than having a place to stay – it's about being part of a welcoming, respectful and inclusive community where everyone can feel safe, supported and at home. As you settle into independent living, you'll share spaces, experiences and responsibilities with students from a wide range of backgrounds, and we're here to help you make the most of that experience.
Your Residential Experience Team (ResX) is here to support you in understanding what positive community living looks like, from building respectful relationships with those around you to navigating the challenges that can sometimes come with communal living. Alongside support and guidance, all students must understand and meet the expectations set out in their Licence Agreement and the University's Code of Conduct. By working together, we can create a positive halls community where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
Now that you have moved into your new home, you may be sharing with people from other cultures who may do things differently to you. There is no right way to live in halls, as a student community we embrace our differences and celebrate them.
The Living Black at University Pledge is a sector-wide commitment launched by CUBO and Unite Students to create safer, more inclusive experiences for Black students and staff in UK student accommodation and residential life.
We want everyone to have a positive experience living in our Halls of Residence. To help achieve this, we have clear expectations for all residents and a process for managing behaviour that falls below those standards. As part of this process, you will be invited to an Advice and Guidance meeting. This provides an opportunity to discuss any reports we have received, understand the circumstances, and explain the next steps if the behaviour continues.
Your wellbeing is at the heart of this process. During the meeting, we will explore any factors that may have contributed to the behaviour and ensure that appropriate support is available throughout.
Each hall has a noticeboard explaining how to report any issues or concerns to the ResX team and the University through our Report and Support platform. If anything is affecting your wellbeing or your experience in halls, we encourage you to let us know so we can provide support and help resolve the issue.
