Allocation Principles

Choosing your accommodation is an important part of preparing for university, and we want to make the process as clear and straightforward as possible.

On this page, you will find everything you need to know about how to apply, how accommodation is made available, and how rooms are allocated. We also explain what to expect at each stage and how we support different groups of students.

Accommodation Guarantee

We offer an accommodation guarantee for all first-year students. This means that if you meet the eligibility criteria and apply for accommodation, you will receive an offer of a room in University-arranged accommodation.

Full details of eligibility can be found on our Accommodation Guarantee.

Who can apply for accommodation?

Anyone with a firm offer to study at the University can apply for accommodation.

How the application process works

  1. Submit your application  - Once applications open, you can apply for accommodation and provide your preferences, as well as let us know about any specific requirements. You will need to select at least three preferences, in order of priority, choosing a Hall and room type for each

  2. Allocation takes place - Rooms are allocated based on availability, your preferences, and any additional requirements

  3. Offer issued - You will receive an accommodation offer by email, usually within 2 weeks of submitting your application.

  4. Accept your offer - You will need to accept your offer within the stated timeframe to secure your room.

For more information, watch our short video explaining the application process.

Choice and Availability

To ensure fairness, rooms are released in phases rather than all at once. This allows all applicants, including those still considering their university options, an equal opportunity to access accommodation.

If your preferred option is not currently visible on the portal, it may be released in a later phase.

Room release dates are as follows:

  •  Phase 1: 1 April (applications open)

  •  Phase 2: 5 May 2026

  •  Phase 3: 5 June 2026

Some residences and room types are more popular than others and may become unavailable quickly within each phase.

Applications remain open throughout the allocation period; however, availability may become more limited as rooms are selected.

Important: Not all room types will be available during the release phases. In some cases, rooms may have already been allocated to returning students, applicants who previously deferred their place, or reserved to meet the needs of students with specific medical or accessibility requirements.

How we allocate rooms

Accommodation is allocated based on your stated preferences and the availability of rooms at the point your application is processed. Our allocation system places students into the highest available preference at the time of allocation.

If we are unable to offer a room that matches any of your preferences, we will either:

  • Offer the closest available alternative, or

  • Contact you to discuss suitable options

If you are not happy with your allocated room

If, for any reason, you are not completely satisfied with the room you have been allocated, please contact us, and a member of the team will be able to advise on any alternative options that are available.

Students with Medical or Accessibility Requirements

If you have a medical condition, disability, or accessibility requirement that may impact your accommodation, you can tell us when you apply.

We may contact you for further information to ensure you are offered accommodation that is suitable for your needs.
