Student Mediation Service

Living with housemates can sometimes lead to disagreements about noise, guests, cleaning, shared spaces, bills, communication and different lifestyles. Community Engagements Student Mediation Service provides a free, confidential and voluntary space for eligible 糖心原创 students to work through household disputes with the support of an impartial mediator.

The mediator does not take sides or impose an outcome; instead, they help students communicate, understand each other's perspectives and work towards an agreement that is appropriate for their circumstances.

The service is available to currently enrolled 糖心原创 students living in off-campus private student accommodation, including private rentals and purpose-built student accommodation.

What can mediation help with?

The Student Mediation Service can help with a range of household disagreements, including:

  • Noise and household routines – loud music, parties, alarms and different study or sleep schedules
  • Cleaning and household chores – cleaning standards, bins, dishes and household responsibilities
  • Shared expenses – household bills, heating costs and disagreements about shared purchases
  • Communication difficulties – misunderstandings, unresponsiveness and concerns that have built up without being discussed
  • Shared spaces – use of kitchens, bathrooms, living rooms and fridge/freezer space
  • Guests and visitors – overnight guests, frequency of visitors, behaviour and boundaries
  • Cultural differences – differences in cooking practices, social norms and other aspects of shared living
  • Safety and security – concerns about doors, windows, unknown visitors and different perspectives on household safety

What is outside the service?

Some situations are not suitable for mediation and may require support from another University service or an external organisation.
The service does not cover:

  • Criminal matters
  • Safeguarding concerns
  • Landlord or tenancy disputes
  • Harassment, serious bullying or significant power imbalances
  • Domestic abuse or violence
  • Academic misconduct
  • Conflicts involving non-students or other third parties
  • Romantic relationship issues

If your situation falls outside the scope of mediation, you may be signposted to an appropriate service or escalation route.
