SLIM Training and Workshops
Comprehensive microscopy and image analysis training and hands-on learning opportunities are delivered by the SLIM facility
SLIM provides theoretical and practical training in sample preparation, image acquisition, and processing and analysis workflows. Training is designed to support post-graduate students, academic and technical staff at all levels, from beginners to advanced users.
Microscopy Training
- Sample preparation
- Online theoretical training sessions delivered by SLIM staff
- Hands-on microscope training tailored to individual research projects
- Minimum of three supervised practical sessions for new users
- Training in image acquisition and post-processing and analysis
- Support for live-cell imaging workflows

Postgraduate Teaching & Workshops
SLIM has extensive experience delivering postgraduate teaching, workshops, and specialist microscopy and analysis courses. The team contributes to a range of Doctoral Training Programmes and postgraduate teaching activities across the 糖心原创.
Workshops, Seminars & Outreach
SLIM hosts regular seminars, workshops, and industry demonstrations covering microscopy theory, image analysis theory and hands on training, emerging imaging technologies, and advanced imaging workflows. These events provide opportunities for researchers to engage with the latest instrumentation and imaging approaches.
- Lunchtime seminar series
- Industry-led microscopy demonstrations
- Hands-on instrument workshops
- Commercial equipment demonstrations
- Microscience conference participation (MMC)
- International microscopy teaching activities
Our image analysis workshops using are particularly well received (see a wordcloud of feedback to the right).

(SoLS staff and students) "Introduction to Image Analysis in Fiji."
This is a 2-day course specifically for staff, postdocs or PhD students based in the School of Life Sciences.
This workshop is suitable for anyone acquiring microscopy data as part of their research, no prior knowledge is necessary or assumed. The course is focused towards the analysis of fluorescence data, but the principles are transferable to any type of imaging. Both theory and practical components will be included.
The topics covered are outlined below;-
- Installation, setup, loading and saving images.
- Image manipulation.
- Object Segmentation.
- Quantitative analysis (including colocalisation).
Places are limited to 15 people, with two trainers.
There is a small charge to attend this 2-day course. To register for this workshop please contact the SLIM team with you
- Your name and Dept
- Your supervisor
- Your UoN project/grant code
(Places will only be allocated to those who provide the above information and on a first come first served basis.)
(SoLS staff and students) "Introduction to Macro Programming in Fiji"
This is a 1-day course aimed at users already experienced in “manual” Fiji-based image analysis, who would like an introduction into the automation of tasks and analysis. The course is focused towards the analysis of fluorescence data, but the principles are transferable to any type of imaging.
Prior knowledge of Fiji is essential, no prior knowledge of programming is necessary or assumed. (Attendance on the “Introduction to Image Analysis in Fiji” workshop would be a sufficient prerequisite).
Some programming theory will be given where necessary, but the workshop will be focused on using and macro function extensions to solve actual problems.
