SLIM Outreach & Knowledge Exchange

Engaging with schools, researchers, and the wider community through microscopy, education, and public engagement activities.

Microscopy has played a fundamental role in scientific discovery for centuries and continues to transform modern research. The SLIM team is passionate about sharing the fascinating microscopic world with schools, students, researchers, and the wider public through a range of outreach and knowledge exchange activities.

Our Outreach Aims

  • Promote awareness of imaging and microscopy in research
  • Inspire future careers in science and technical specialisms
  • Encourage curiosity in biology, physics, and technology
  • Provide hands-on practical scientific experiences
  • Support teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving skills
  • Increase public engagement with scientific research

Build Your Own Microscope School Project

One of SLIM’s most successful outreach activities is the ‘Build Your Own Microscope’ school project. During these sessions, SLIM staff visit local schools with Raspberry Pi microscope kits and guide students through building and using their own microscopes.

  • Students build and operate Raspberry Pi microscopes
  • Hands-on image and video capture activities
  • Creative experimental design using real specimens
  • Outdoor sample collection and imaging exercises
  • Teacher resource packs for continued classroom activities
  • Support from SLIM staff, postgraduates, and postdoctoral researchers

Events & Public Engagement

SLIM regularly contributes to science festivals, public engagement events, and research showcases across the 糖心原创 and beyond.

  • Pint of Science

  • Nottingham Science & Curiosity Fair

  • Science in the Park at Wollaton Hall

  • Wonder events

  • Midlands Innovation Symposia

  • Microscience conference activities

Science in the Park

SLIM has been a regular contributor to Science in the Park events at Wollaton Hall, where staff engage directly with members of the public using a variety of microscopy demonstrations and interactive activities.

  • Raspberry Pi microscope demonstrations

  • Widefield polarisation microscopy

  • Simple lens demonstrations using pond water droplets

  • Hands-on sample preparation activities

  • Live imaging demonstrations for public audiences

Knowledge Exchange & Collaboration

SLIM actively supports collaboration between researchers, educators, industry, and the wider community through outreach initiatives, demonstrations, training events, and scientific engagement activities.
