Driving a cleaner future

We are translating world-class research into real-world industry solutions. Together with industry, national and regional government we accelerate the UK’s industrial effort to drive carbon reduction across aerospace, marine, rail, heavy-duty transport, and power generation sectors. The university enables global industrial partners to develop, integrate, and scale low-carbon propulsion systems, putting us at the centre of their technology development to support jobs and growth across the East Midlands and the UK.

Our drive builds upon £70+ million investments in world-class programmes and facilities on Jubilee Campus. This includes the new Zero Carbon Innovation Centre and Hybrid Propulsion Systems Building where test and validation of hydrogen, ammonia, electrification technologies, and alternative fuels – including cryogenic and environmental testing – introduce a unique UK capability. Together with facilities such as the Power Electronics and Machines Centre (PEMC), this connected infrastructure provides a complete platform for design, testing, validation, and manufacturing.

This work leverages the university’s research strengths in electrification, hybrid propulsion systems as well as fusion, batteries and materials. By bridging the gap between lab discoveries and high-power applications, we translate cutting-edge research into medium-to-high TRL commercial solutions. This approach reduces development risk, retains vital intellectual property in the UK, and drives critical economic growth.

Turning metal waste into a catalyst for hydrogen production

Hydrogen is vital to the future energy mix, yet production often depends on fossil fuels. Even electrolysis, which uses water and electricity, relies on costly catalysts such as platinum. Our researchers have found a way to turn metal manufacturing waste into highly efficient catalysts, reducing reliance on precious metals.

Recovering and recycling materials for a more sustainable future

Researchers are developing innovative ways to recover, reuse and recycle polyurethane materials, helping to reduce waste and support a more circular economy. By finding new approaches to manage and repurpose these widely used plastics, this work is paving the way for more sustainable manufacturing and resource use.

Powering the future of clean shipping

Shipping drives global trade but generates about 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions. We are leading research to reduce these emissions by exploring ammonia as a clean, carbon-free fuel. Through the MariNH3 programme and the Clean Maritime Research Hub, researchers are advancing large-scale engine testing and tackling the technical, social and policy barriers to transforming maritime transport.
