Engineering biology
We apply engineering principles to design and construct microbes and biomolecules for health, sustainability and industrial applications.
Our multidisciplinary collaborations bring together experts in fields of Engineering biology and Glyco-engineering to develop prototype vaccines against all their variants; tackle the 100-day epidemic rapid response challenge; and develop lean industrialisation through building GlycoForge – a high-throughput, low-cost, replicable prototype vaccine development facility.
The GlycoCell Mission Hub (£12.3m in UKRI funding) uses engineering biology to “programme” glycan sugars to accelerate vaccine discovery and create new therapeutics. Our work aims to transform biomanufacturing for health, providing safe, scalable, low-cost biomanufacturing of designer glycans & glycoproteins for vaccines, therapeutics & diagnostics.
