Description: A team of researchers from the School of Chemistry, including Dr Andrei Khlobystov, Dr Nick Besley and Dr Elena Bichoutskaia, in collaboration with Ulm University has shown for the first time that chemical reactions at the nano-level which change the structure of carbon nanotubes can be sparked by an 'attack' from within.

Description: Professor Martyn Poliakoff CBE has received one of the science world's highest honours by being nominated as the new Foreign Secretary of the Royal Society, the UK's national academy of science. In his role as Foreign Secretary, Professor Poliakoff will represent the British scientific community abroad and will be responsible for overseeing the Society's international business. The post of Foreign Secretary of the Royal Society dates back to 1723 鈥� predating the post of Foreign Secretary in the UK government by sixty years.

Description: Third-year PhD student Markus Hammonds has been awarded a prestigious Universitas 21 Scholarship by the University's Graduate School to undertake 6 weeks of experiments in the Chemistry Department at The University of Hong Kong. Markus will be studying how polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules form in astronomical environments.

Description: The East Midlands Section of the Royal Society of Chemistry presented their annual Undergraduate Practical Prizes on the 10th March at the E.On Technology Centre, as part of their AGM. These prizes are awarded to students at East Midlands universities who have obtained the highest practical mark in their first year of their degree course. This year the student from Nottingham awarded this prize was Rowena Howie, now in her second year.

Description: Chemistry staff have been singled out as part of a new awards programme that recognises exceptional achievement at the University. Professor Martyn Poliakoff, Dr Peter Licence and Dr Samantha Tang are among the winners of the Vice-Chancellor's Achievement Awards 2010, for their joint work on a hugely popular film project that has received millions of hits on YouTube. More than 160 short films have been created as part of 'The Periodic Table of Videos', which has embraced social media to make an often-complex subject come alive for students, school pupils, teachers and myriad internet users.

Description: School of Chemistry postgraduate student Kate Hamer will soon be briefing politicians on science and health matters at Westminster following the award of a BBSRC funded placement at the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology (POST). The highly competitive selection process involved Kate writing a briefing document on 'legal highs' and a challenging panel interview.

Description: From June 25th to July 4th 糖心原创 scientists took part in an exhibition to celebrate the 350th anniversary of the Royal Society, the UK's national academy of science. A large team from the School of Chemistry presented their world-leading research in low pressure hydrogen storage, at the South Bank Centre in London.
