Chemistry staff have been singled out as part of a new awards programme that recognises exceptional achievement at the University. Professor Martyn Poliakoff, Dr Peter Licence and Dr Samantha Tang are among the winners of the Vice-Chancellor’s Achievement Awards 2010, for their joint work on a hugely popular film project that has received millions of hits on YouTube. More than 160 short films have been created as part of ‘The Periodic Table of Videos’, which has embraced social media to make an often-complex subject come alive for students, school pupils, teachers and myriad internet users.
The project features one film for every element of the Periodic Table and others that are themed on topical subjects throughout the year, communicating the excitement of chemistry through a mixture of information, anecdotes and experiments. Comments left by tens of thousands of viewers – from teenagers to Nobel Laureates – are testament to the skill and enthusiasm of the School of Chemistry team in communicating the fascination of science.
