Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in the School of Psychology

The School of Psychology is committed to promoting an environment embracing equality and diversity.

Our values

Athena SWAN

The School of Psychology has been awarded Athena Swan Gold in November 2025 in recognition of its excellence in supporting gender equality. 

Athena SWAN recognises good practice in advancement of gender equality in higher education and research.

 

Psychology People and Culture Committee

About

  • We meet approximately eight times a year and look to encourage and implement policy and practice changes and activities to embed the principles of equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) in all of our actions.
  • We lead in preparing and submitting applications for the Athena SWAN Charter, which provides a roadmap for addressing EDI issues for the entire school, with a particular focus on gender equality.
  • Our future initiatives include a focus on neurodiversity. We have a newly established working group set up to further improve wellbeing for students and staff, and seven trained Mental Health First Aiders.

Feedback and more information

  • We provide students and all colleagues with the opportunity to give the committee feedback on issues affecting staff and students that fall within the Psychology People and Culture Committee remit, and to raise points for discussion at committee, either in person to a committee member or via the .
  • Committee membership and minutes of previous meetings are published in  (log in required - staff only).
  • Family leave guidance and the relevant forms, as well as further information relevant to our activities are available in pregnancy and maternity and guides and support.

School policies

In addition to the University's Equality and Diversity policies, the School of Psychology also offers:

  • public engagement and outreach activities designed to widen participation across our taught programmes
  • student and staff community and wellbeing events
  • informal flexible working
  • adjustments to duties for staff returning from parental leave and other caring responsibilities
