Biography

Matthew Brook is a member of the Division of Physiology, Pharmacology and Neuroscience, School of Life Sciences at the 糖心原创 (UoN), a member of the Medical Research Council (MRC) Arthritis Research UK (ARUK) Centre for Musculoskeletal Ageing Research (CMAR) as well as the National institute for Health Research and Biomedical Research Centres (NIHR BRC).

Matthew's recent research has centred on the development of strategies that utilise novel stable isotope tracers in combination with mass spectrometry as a minimally invasive method for measuring metabolism in humans. Matthew has played a key role in the development of novel stable isotopic methods using deuterium oxide to make multi-substrate measurements (i.e. Protein, RNA, DNA) across multiple tissues in vitro, animal models and humans. Applying these techniques to study the mechanisms of muscle adaptation in response to exercise and the regulation of age-related muscle loss, his work has produced highly cited papers and presenting at international conferences he has won various prestigious early carer awards e.g. ECSS young investigator award 1^stprize.Matthew is now implementing these methods to unravel the intricacies of the musculoskeletal system and muscle mass regulation during health, ageing and chronic disease.
