I teach on a range of courses at undergraduate level. In Year 1, I teach on the Zoology Field Skills course, a week-long residential field course in the UK that provides fundamental training in ecological surveying techniques. In Year 2, I convene Ecology and Higher Skills (Experimental Design and Analysis) and teach on the Behavioural Ecology field course, which currently runs in Portugal. In Year 3, I convene Social Evolution and in Year 4 I convene Process and Practice in Science, which considers science as both a philosophical and practical pursuit. I also supervise third-year research projects.

Current Research

I am interested in the evolution of social behaviour. My research focuses both on the processes shaping cooperative and competitive traits over evolutionary timescales and on the decision-making processes guiding social interactions among individuals. Within this broad area, my research has focused in particular on (a) decision-making during contests over resources, (b) the mechanisms and consequences of kin discrimination and (c) explaining patterns of parental and alloparental care across species. To investigate these topics, I have used a combination of lab- and field-based behavioural experiments with arthropods, fish and birds and arthropods, comparative analysis, and modelling.
