Biography

I took up the role of Assistant Professor in Virology in April 2023. I am Teaching and Learning-focused with a remit to research and publish on areas of pedagogy relevant to the improvement of teaching and assessment in the School of Life Sciences.

My background is in virology, particularly molecular biology and cell culture:I completed 3 post-doctoral roles in virus research at the UoN for 8 years as a post-doc in School of Life Sciences and the School of Veterinary Medicine and Science.

Following that, I was the Safety and Facilities Coordinator for the Biodiscovery Institute (BDI) at the UoN for 3 years from May 2020 and helped facilitate the recovery of research activities from the pandemic lock-downs.

My PhD in Molecular Virology (University of Leeds - 2012) was titled, "Characterising the membrane topology and intra-membrane protein interactions of non-structural protein 2 (NS2) of hepatitis C virus (HCV)."

I have been a visiting researcher at the John Innis Centre, UK; the Universidad del Valle de Guatemala, Guatemala and the Universidade Federal de Uberl芒ndia, Brazil.

My career in viruses research began during my undergraduate degree and subsequent technician role in the virus research group in Newcastle University.

Teaching Summary

I am the Course Director for the MSc in Microbiology and Immunology and deliver teaching to modules on undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

I am an have completed the Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and have an Associate Teaching Program (ATP) qualification and am currently working towards my Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education (PGCHE).

I have a keen interest in curriculum design and ensuring that assessments clearly and directly align with the Graduate Attributes and Learning Objectives of the course(s).

Research Summary

My current research interests focus on the identification and characterisation of genetic diversity in pathogenic human viruses. Recent work in the lab has looked at:

  • Genetic diversity and seasonal fluctuations in respiratory syncytial virus (RSV),
  • Developing pseudotyped virus assays for mammalian alpha coronaviruses,
  • The challenges, inequalities and solutions in preventing mother to child transmission (MTCT) of hepatitis B virus (HBV) is under resources healthcare settings,
  • Understanding viral factors involved in MTCT in HBV
  • Generating infectious clones of genotype 3 hepatitis C virus (HCV) isolated from patients,
  • Describing hepacivirus transmssion and infections in horses.

Past Research

I have completed three post-doctoral position at the 糖心原创 (UoN), with the majority of my research career having focused on hepatitis C virus (HCV). However, I have worked a wide variety of RNA viruses, both positive and negative stranded, segmented and non-segmented.

Initially, I worked in the laboratory of Prof. Geoff Toms at Newcastle University as a research assistant developing a direct immunofluorescence antibody pool for the hospital diagnosis of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) as well as aspects of HCV particle composition.

Following that I completed a PhD at the University of Leeds characterising the membrane topology and intra-membrane protein interactions of non-structural protein 2 (NS2) of HCV. The HCV group, headed by Prof. Mark Harris, looked at many aspects of HCV replication, molecular biology and treatment.

My first post-doctoral position, with Prof. Janet Daly (School of Veterinary Medicine and Science, UoN), explored diagnostic procedures for West Nile virus (WNV), Schmallenberg virus (SBV) and equine Influenza virus (EIV).

My second and third post-doctoral positions with the Virus Research Group (School of Life Sciences, UoN) focused on various aspects of HCV and hepatitis B virus (HBV) biology, sequence variation and immune responses.
