Computer Science in the Wild

In recent years, the School of Computer Science has been characterised by growth in student numbers, together with rising entry tariff, in both undergraduate and postgraduate cohorts. This, and the potential for further growth in student population, in conjunction with excellent performance in attracting external research income, places Computer Science in a strong financial position. Opportunity exists for expansion of both our research and teaching staff base. Planned strategic expansion of the School began in 2019 and has seen the University invest heavily both in staff appointments and in associated infrastructure, including laboratory space and equipment. Computer Science intends to grow.

The School has exceptional, world-leading presence in key areas of Computer Science, artificial intelligence, computer vision, functional programming, cyber security, human-computer and human-robot interaction, and responsible innovation. The School of Computer Science has a strong inter-disciplinary ethos, with research projects and relationships spanning the institution. While our research is organised around a small set of recognised Research Groups, collaboration across group boundaries in encouraged, as is the development of Special Interest Groups, the seeds of future Research Groups.

School Vision

Our overarching aim is to address core Computer Science challenges in real-world scenarios, pursuing Computer Science in the Wild.  We are not only interested in exploring novel techniques, theories, algorithms and methods of interaction within Computer Science as a discipline; we also seek to create novel deployments of computer systems across disciplinary boundaries and identify novel ways for computer scientists to interact with non-CS colleagues and a wide range of industrial partners. School staff work across a broad array of application domains including healthcare (diagnostics, rehabilitation, pharmaceuticals, and mental health), bioscience (agriculture and plant science), creative industry (music, virtual and mixed reality), digital manufacturing, privacy and security, regulation and policy.

We believe that world-class, multidisciplinary and diverse teams will deliver the highest quality teaching, research, and student experience. Our vision as a School is to be highly rated in all areas, for Research and Knowledge Exchange, Education and Student Experience and People and Culture. We are equally committed to creating opportunities for people from groups traditionally under-represented in the field of Computer Science and seek to provide a stimulating and supportive working environment for all.

We look forward to you joining us and helping to develop Computer Science at Nottingham in new and exciting directions.
