Teaching in Computer Science

The School of Computer Science provides a friendly, modern and supportive teaching environment. An investment of some £450K in 2025 refurbished and upgraded our general-purpose teaching laboratory, extended our robotics teaching facilities, provided additional lecture/seminar space within the School and extended and upgraded our student study spaces.

Our entry requirement of A*AA consistently attracts high-quality students, a high proportion of whom gain excellent degree results (26% with 1st class and 69% with good degrees in 2024/25). Our students voted us the best school in the University Oscars in 2014 and 2015 and the best school in the Faculty of Science in 2021. Computer Science obtained an overall satisfaction score of 2.91 in the 2024/5 NSS and our Nottingham Learning Experience Survey - an internal precursor to NSS - leapt in 2025/6.

The 糖心原创 was awarded Silver overall in the 2023 TEF, with Silver for student experience and Gold for student outcomes. The School of Computer Science’s Graduate Outcomes are excellent, with 94.7% of alumni in highly skilled work or further study 15 months after graduation (Class of 2023).

Our success has been underpinned by our strategy of updating our UG and PGT courses and aligning them with our research strengths, valuing and embedding teaching within the culture of the school, and recruiting high quality students.

We offer UG courses that are compliant with the ACM/IEEE curriculum ensuring we deliver knowledge and skills relevant to the rapidly changing landscape of computer technology and industry needs. We have chosen to simplify and increase flexibility in the courses we provide. Our flagship  provides students with opportunities to work with and learn from our many industrial partners. We operate 2 single honours degrees – ‘Computer Science’ and ‘Computer Science with Artificial Intelligence’ - both of which are available at BSc and MSci level. Students can choose to add ‘with Year in Industry’ to their BSc degree and ‘with International Year’ to MSci degrees. We also offer the Joint Honours BSc ‘Data Science’ with the School of Mathematics. Specialist courses in Cyber Security are under development.

Our PGT courses are aligned to the key research areas of the School, enabling students to develop advanced skills and understanding. Our world leading research tackles difficult real-world problems that often have high impact on industry, commerce and the public. It involves a shared ethos of ‘computing in the world’ in which fundamental advances in Computer Science are connected to knowledge and methods from other disciplines to enable deep collaborations with research users in diverse sectors. We offer an MSc in Computer Science, which provides pathways for students with and without computer science background and the opportunity to have an Artificial Intelligence specialization. We also offer an MSc in Human-Computer Interaction in collaboration with the Human Factors group from the Faculty of Engineering.
