If you're applying for your visa from your home country follow these steps in order and check the common questions we get from applicants.
Don't travel to the UK before your visa start date. You must only travel to the UK after your Student visa has been granted. If you enter the UK before the start date of your Student permission then you will be entering the UK as a Standard Visitor Visa holder which won’t allow you to register on the course for which your Student visa is granted.
Have these ready:
- A current passport, valid for the whole of your time in the UK
- Financial evidence in the format UKVI requires (see Step 2)
- Your CAS number, we'll send this when you're ready (see Step 3)
Apply as early as possible once you have your CAS. If you receive your results or funding confirmation closer to the start date of your course, you may have only a short window, so prepare your financial evidence in advance.
Current students who are making a visa application overseas for any reason - such as returning from an interruption of studies - should skip straight to Step 2.
Step 1: Accept your offer and pay any deposit
We can only issue your CAS once you've firmly accepted your Nottingham offer, met all conditions, and paid any required deposit. Most postgraduate taught (master's) courses require a CAS deposit before we issue a CAS. Some courses have a course deposit too. You'll see any applicable charges on your NottinghamHub account.
Step 2: Prepare your financial evidence
Start this early, the money usually has to be held for 28 continuous days before you apply, so this cannot wait until after your CAS is issued.
UKVI requires evidence that you have enough money to cover:
- Your remaining tuition fees for the first year (any fees you've already paid will be shown on your CAS)
- Living costs of £1,171 per month for nine months (£10,539 in total) if you'll study outside London,
- Living costs for any dependants you're eligible to bring, at £680 per person per month for nine months
The rules on how the money must be held, for how long, in whose name and in what currency, are strict. Read the gov.uk guidance carefully and allow for currency fluctuations and bank charges. If you are from a country UKVI lists as 'differentiated', you don't have to send the evidence with your application, but you must have it in the correct format in case it's asked for.
See our funding page for a full breakdown of the financial requirements and acceptable evidence.
Accommodation fees are not included in your CAS, so we advise you not to pay these in advance, other than the deposit you'll need to pay when booking accommodation.
Your CAS is the document you need to apply for your visa.
We'll start preparing it once you've met the requirements in Step 1, and email you when it's ready to check on your NottinghamHub.
Check every detail of your CAS carefully, name, date of birth, passport number, course title and dates, fees paid and any scholarship awarded. If anything is wrong, tell us through NottinghamHub before you apply. Errors on your CAS can cause your visa to be refused.
If you are a current student needing a new CAS (following a transfer of course, interruption of studies or course extension) then you need to request this via the .
Your CAS expires six months after we issue it and is valid for one visa application only. Don't apply more than six months before your course starts.
Step 4: Check if you need ATAS
If you're studying a master's or PhD in certain science and technology subjects, you may need ATAS clearance before you apply for your visa. We'll tell you in a direct communication and on your CAS if it applies.
Apply for ATAS free on gov.uk. It takes around six weeks. You cannot apply for your visa without it, so apply as soon as it is confirmed you need it. Don't apply more than five months before your course starts, the certificate is only valid for six months.
Step 5: Check if you need a TB test
Students from some countries need a tuberculosis test before applying. to see if this applies to you. The test must be done at a UKVI-approved clinic.
, using our student visa application form guidance to help you answer the questions correctly. The form will ask for your CAS number and course details, passport details, finances, immigration and travel history and information on any dependants. Have everything ready before you start, but you can save your answers and return it later if you need to.
You will choose your application type and pay the appropriate fee, . You can expect to receive a decision within around three weeks after submitting your biometric information or verifying your identity, but this is not guaranteed and can take longer at peak times (July to September). A priority service is often available for an additional fee.
If you are from the EU/EEA and have a biometric passport, you may be able to verify your identity using the UK Immigration ID Check app, the form will tell you. Otherwise, you'll book and attend a biometric appointment at a visa application centre in your country. You can find your nearest centre on gov.uk, but only book your appointment when instructed, after you have paid for your visa application.
You will be instructed to upload your supporting documents as part of the online application.
Step 7: Attend your appointment (if applicable) and any credibility interview
At your biometric appointment you'll give your fingerprints and have your photograph taken. Some applicants are also asked to attend a short credibility interview, in person or by video, about your course, your reasons for choosing it, and how you'll fund your study. Answer honestly and in your own words.
We can help you understand what to expect - email us before your appointment if you'd like to talk it through.
Step 8: Get your decision
You'll receive an eVisa, a digital immigration status you'll view and prove using your UKVI account.
Don't travel to the UK before your visa start date. You must travel to the UK and register in person by the latest registration deadline.
Step 9: Set up your UKVI account and tell us
After your visa is granted, set up your UKVI account, check every detail, and generate a share code. You'll need this for registration and to prove your status.
See our From eVisa to registration page for support to set up your account and generate your share code.
If your application is refused
Email immigration-support@nottingham.ac.uk straight away with your refusal letter.
We can advise on next steps, whether to reapply or request an administrative review.
We'll need to issue a new CAS if you reapply. The University's latest date to issue a new CAS is three working days before the official course start date (five working days for pre-sessional English courses).
