The Landscape, Space, Place Research Group (LSPRG)

The LSPRG is an interdisciplinary forum that brings together staff and postgraduate students from across the Faculties of Arts, Social Sciences, and Engineering.

Shared interests in the cultures of place and landscape are pursued from a wide range of disciplinary perspectives, including those of geography, literary studies, art history, architecture, archaeology, and music.

The LSPRG fosters interdisciplinary research and debate by bringing together staff and postgraduates from across the Arts, Social Sciences, and Engineering Faculties

Registrations are now open for the 2019 Landscape, Space and Place postgraduate conference on Violent Spaces.

Overview

The group runs a seminar series, lively reading group sessions, and an Annual Postgraduate Workshop attracting speakers from all over Britain and Ireland. Its main objective is to serve as a hub – within the university and beyond – for innovative, interdisciplinary research that responds in fresh ways to the ongoing ‘spatial turn’ in the arts, humanities, and social sciences.

History

The group has its origins in a co-managed by Prof. Stephen Daniels (Geography) and Prof. Julie Sanders (English), and supported by a grant of £50,000 from the university’s Research Committee under the ‘Interdisciplinary Initiatives in the Humanities’ scheme.

From 2007, the project gave rise to numerous conferences, symposia, seminar series, and readings on topics such as 'Rivers of Meaning', 'Literary Geographies', 'Mappings: Cultural Cartographies', and 'Engagements with Nature'. Details of these events can be found on our Events page.

An 18-month post-doctoral research fellowship was held by Dr Richard Hamblyn (author of The Invention of Clouds) and in 2008 the group welcomed Prof W.J.T. Mitchell (Chicago) as a Leverhulme-funded visiting professor.
