The human flourishing group have substantial experience in relation to a range of research approaches and methodologies including qualitative and quantitative methods, mixed methods studies, longitudinal studies, case studies, and programme evaluations.
Centre staff and students work closely with the Nottingham-based which provides therapy focused on personal growth and development.
Current projects
A continuation project to evaluate the effects of boarding schools for care experienced and vulnerable children
The Royal National Children’s SpringBoard Foundation (RNCSF) have been supporting children who are care experienced or in other vulnerable life situations to attend a boarding school. Previous studies have indicated positive effects for academic attainment so increasing and enhancing later life opportunities. The costs associated with boarding appear to be lower than accessing a residential children’s home or intensive fostering arrangements. This project is a continuation of a previous evaluation of the scheme and will evaluate the impact of boarding opportunities on Key stage 5 outcomes and progression into further training, higher education and work. Using government datasets matched with the boarding school bursary recipients, we will be able to assess the impact of attending a boarding school.

Person-centred organisations: Development and validation of a 12-item scale of facilitative organisational conditions
The project aims to promote the extension of well-established person-centred measures, originally developed from Carl Rogers’ theory of interpersonal relationships, into organisational settings. The study will develop and validate a brief measure designed to assess facilitative organisational conditions, providing an efficient and robust tool for examining person-centred conditions at the organisational level. The project aims to facilitate future empirical research into person-centred organisational conditions and their role in supporting growth-oriented organisational cultures.

Intersectionality in higher education: Transitions and transformations of sexual minority international students
The challenges international students face in higher education are well recognised. Yet little is known about sexual minority international students, whose experiences range from increased freedom to deeper marginalisation. This project examines how sexual minority international students adapt during the transition to higher education, using a mixed-methods longitudinal design. By integrating individual–social and temporal–contextual dimensions, this research advances an intersectional understanding that goes beyond sexuality and international status, illustrating how personal and contextual dynamics shape sexual minority international students’ adaptation and potential transformative growth. The findings aim to inform inclusive practices, institutional policies, and support systems that better serve diverse student communities in UK higher education and beyond.
