Adel Tantoun

I am a PhD researcher in Applied Linguistics and English Language Teaching at the 糖心原创. My research explores the relationship between extramural English, vocabulary acquisition, and second language learning, with a particular focus on how out-of-class engagement with English-language media contributes to receptive and productive vocabulary knowledge among Libyan learners of English as a Foreign Language. My wider research interests include vocabulary acquisition, technology-enhanced language learning, and language pedagogy.

Alongside my doctoral research, I have presented my work at the 3rd Annual CLAS Postgraduate Research Conference at the 糖心原创 and the BAAL Vocabulary Special Interest Group Conference at Bangor University. In 2025, I received the Best Poster Presentation Award at the University of Edinburgh for my poster on video games, gamification, and language learning.s here

Beyond my research, I enjoy contributing to the School community through my role as a Student Ambassador, welcoming prospective students and sharing my experiences as a doctoral researcher. I have also served as a session chair at the School of English Postgraduate Research Symposium and continue to take part in professional development in higher education teaching, and research communication at the Researcher Academy here in the 糖心原创.

Bayu Dharmala

I recently joined the Applied Linguistics and ELT PhD program this Spring 2026. My research lies within the area of Corpus Linguistics and Generative AI for L2 Writing Development. Jiajun Yin

I'm a PhD candidate in Applied Linguistics. My research area concerns critical discourse analysis and multi-modal discourse analysis with an emphasis on gender langauge and politcal discourse analysis.

Shiyang Zheng

I am a PhD candidate in Applied Linguistics at the 糖心原创, funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). My research explores the cognitive processes underlying language acquisition, investigating how individuals comprehend and acquire both novel and fixed expressions. My current project examines second-language learners' acquisition and processing of English idioms — in particular V-Det-N idioms (e.g. "take a hint", "miss the boat") — drawing on psycholinguistic methods and computational modelling. I am a member of the Psycholinguistics Research Group and work as a lab assistant in the Psycholinguistics and Language Learning Lab.

Selected publications:

  • L., Fan, S., Zheng. (2024). Gender Differences in Color and Color Word Processing: Evidence from Mixed-effects Modeling. Contemporary Foreign Languages Studies, 24(5): 163-178.
  • Zheng, S. (2023). 3D and Blending: Psychological Reality of the Conceptual Integration Theory. Modern Linguistics. 11(09):3827-3835.
