Biography

I work in the area of applied linguistics, corpus linguistics, and second language acquisition. More specifically, I focus on the acquisition and use of vocabulary by second/foreign language learners, with a particular focus on phraseology and computer-assisted language learning. In the past, I was actively involved in the development of large-scale language assessment tools for English Language Learners in the USA. My other interests include corpus-based linguistic analysis, replication research, teaching and learning of international students, distance learning, and digital pedagogies.

With my current role as the Director of Postgraduate Taught Courses (PGT) in the School of English, my teaching focuses mostly on MA level, but I also contribute to undergraduate courses. I have developed and taught modules on general linguistics, research methods, second language acquisition, corpus linguistics, language teaching, all of which delivered both on campus (MA in Applied Linguistics and MA in Applied Linguistics & English Language Teaching) and online (our innovative and award-winning Online English delivered via distance learning). My pedagogic work and research centre around the student experience and ways of enhancing it, particularly in relation to the learning and teaching of international and distance students.

I also have extensive experience in supervising BA-, MA-, PhD-level projects and dissertations. In terms of PhD supervision, my current students explore topics related to language learning in online and informal contexts, the effectiveness of blended learning and CALL, the application of corpus methods in language analysis, and the use of AI in second language learning and teaching.

Current Research

I have recently authored a manuscript focused on corpus-based research into the notion of collocations. Collocations, Corpora and Language Learning has been published by Cambridge University Press as part of the Elements series. Another recent project is Vocabulary Theory, Patterning and Teaching (Szudarski & Barclay 2022, Multilingual Matters), a volume that showcases the current state of knowledge in the field of vocabulary studies. In 2022, I also co-authored a volume called Digital Teaching for Linguistics, which provides both an introduction to digital pedagogy and a discussion of technology-driven teaching practices related to online and distance education (Gregory, Norledge, Stockwell & Szudarski 2022, Routledge).

My other research interests concern the importance of replication in L2 research. For instance, in a range of studies involving L2-Spanish learners from across different learning contexts (Morgan-Short et al., 2018; Szudarski & Miko艂ajczak, 2023), we explored the effects of attention to form during L2 listening and reading comprehension, gaining both theoretical and methodological insights. Similarly, in a recent publication with colleagues from Belgium, we showed the benefits of multi-site replication for studying the effects of repetition on L2 collocational learning (Peters, Puimege & Szudarski, 2023).

In the past, I was actively involved in research on language testing. Through my work at the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) in Washington, I gained experience in the development of large-scale language assessment tools for English Language Learners in the USA.

For a number of years, I have been a member of the British Association for Applied Linguistics (BAAL). In 2021, I was elected an ordinary member of the BAAL Executive Committee. Further, I have also been a member of the Coordinating Committee of the BAAL Vocabulary Studies Special Interest Group (Treasurer in years 2018-22 & Convenor since 2022).
