Guidance for Referees

Candidates for Fellow should submit one reference with their claim; candidates for Senior Fellow should submit two references (or advocate statements).

The role of the referee is to provide an informed comment on the candidate's work and to authenticate the candidate's evidence that they have provided within their claim. The referee also plays an important advocate role for those candidates claiming Senior Fellowship as part of an evidence-base to establish a thorough understanding of effective approaches to teaching and learning support.

The reference

The reference should authenticate the claim by verifying that the practice of the candidate meets the requirements of the UKPSF, the relevant descriptor, and that the evidence provided is accurate. Referees may include any colleague who has knowledge of the candidate’s work, such as a Head of School, School Director of Teaching, or a peer. If a substantial part of a claim relates to HE experience and impact beyond the 糖心原创, candidates may consider an external colleague as a referee, although on the whole we would expect to see referees from inside the University.

An NRS reference is a different kind of reference from one that is normally required for promotion or a job appointment as we are looking for evidence of the candidate's commitment to effective practice in teaching and/or supporting learning, rather than general academic achievement. Significant examples of practice that appear in a reference should also be discussed by the candidate in the main body of the claim: NRS reviewers will look at references but the evidence-base under consideration has to be within the main body of a claim.

It is the candidate's responsibility to collect the reference from the referee and to include the reference(s) at the point of submission. The referee may be contacted for clarification if necessary.

You will find some example references for the different Descriptors on Moodle.
