Research Fellow, Faculty of Science
James was awarded his PhD from the school of Physics and Astronomy at the 糖心原创 in 2014. During his PhD he had fabricated and characterised photonic structures made entirely from polymer materials. He then worked as a post-doc in the liquid crystals group at the University of Manchester. After one year, the research group re-located to the University of Leeds where he continued his post-doc. His research specialised in 'Liquid crystal optics', which included switchable focus liquid crystal lenses. In 2018, James led the research on liquid crystal contact lenses at 'Dynamic Vision Systems', which was a university spin-out company. In 2020, James started work at Flexenable where he shared his expertise in liquid crystal technology and optical devices. He re-joined the 糖心原创 in 2022 as a post-doc working for Prof Anthony Kent, where he hopes to transfer some of his knowledge on photonic structures and optics into phononic devices for use in THz lasers. He is also passionate about public engagement and was proud to have led the first Leeds city Pint of Science event.
