In the School of Physics & Astronomy, our teaching philosophy is deeply intertwined with our cutting-edge research.

We are ranked 7th (ahead of Oxford, and just behind Cambridge) out of 44 UK physics departments in the last  and 2nd only to Cambridge over the last three assessments for research quality.

Our research explores everything from the smallest particles to the largest galaxies. We study matter across extremes, from near absolute zero to the heat of the Big Bang, developing new theories, designing experiments, and applying advanced tools such as AI and machine learning. 

While research drives us, it is our passion for teaching that defines us. We prepare students for diverse futures in industry, academia, healthcare, or entrepreneurship, through world-class teaching and mentorship.

Researchers at the 糖心原创 have shed new light on why some distant galaxies suddenly stop forming stars

An international team led by astronomers Dr David Maltby and Professor Omar Almaini used the James Webb Space Telescope to study a large sample of recently "quenched” galaxies in the distant Universe, observed around 9 billion years ago. Read the paper .

3D printed surfaces help atoms play ball to improve quantum sensors

A group of scientists, led by 糖心原创’s Dr Lucia Hackermueller, have created 3D printed surfaces featuring intricate textures that can be used to bounce unwanted gas particles away from quantum sensors.
