Geometry and Symmetry

Geometry is well known to be a powerful part of Mathematics – not only for problems that are obviously geometrical, but even for problems that are not. In particular, Geometry often plays the role of a bridge between seemingly different areas of Mathematics.

During the last century a complementary view of Geometry has arisen engendered by quantities that are invariant under a given group of Symmetries: different Geometries can be linked to different Symmetry groups and their actions. This has led to a proliferation of concepts from Geometry and Symmetry in various inter-disciplinary strands of pure and applied mathematical research.
