Biography

I am an Associate Professor in Mental Health in the School of Health Sciences. I hold a PhD in Nursing Studies, MA in Research Methods and Bachelor of Nursing (Hons) all from the ÌÇÐÄÔ­´´. As well as my role within the School of Health Sciences, I am also the Mental Health Lead at the Rights Lab. This is one of six Beacons of Excellence within the ÌÇÐÄÔ­´´ and focuses on modern slavery. Prior to commencing my current role in July 2013, I spent four years working as a Research Fellow at the Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Lincolnshire (CLAHRC NDL). From 2008-2009 I was employed as a Research Associate in the School of Psychology at the University of Birmingham. I am a registered Mental Health Nurse and have worked clinically in acute inpatient and assertive outreach services.

Research Interests:

  • Mental health recovery for survivors of modern slavery.
  • Care transitions in mental health.
  • Knowledge translation and evidence based practice.

My current and recently completed research projects include the following:

  • August 2020 - December 2021: (Role: Joint PI) COVID-19 Risk and Response: Impact and Mitigations for Modern Slavery Victims and Survivors. Funding: £499, 945.71 UKRI.
  • February 2020 - January 2021: (Role: Co-I) Where is the best place for Learning Disability Nurses to intervene to help prevent people with learning disabilities entering the criminal justice system? Funding: £46, 000 Burdett Trust for Nursing.
  • July 2019 - December 2020: (Role: PI) Mental health recovery for survivors of modern slavery: A grounded theory study. Funding: £142, 278.00 NIHR Research for Patient Benefit.
  • April 2018 - December 2018: (Role: PI) The mental health and wellbeing needs of family caregivers who have children/relatives with intellectual disabilities: A systematic review of the evidence. Funding: £15, 563.50 NIHR CLAHRC EM.
