Honorary Degrees Committee

Purpose

A) To consider and approve nomination for the award of honorary degrees on behalf of Council.
B) To report invited nominees to Senate and Council.
C) To consider the revocation of Honorary Graduate status where warranted.

Main Activities

  1. Invite confidential nominations for honorary degrees from members of the University.
  2. Determine and periodically review the process and criteria for inviting, considering, and checking (including undertaking due diligence on) nominations for honorary degrees.
  3. Taking into account the regional, national and international roles of the University, the academic, professional or other distinctions of potential recipients and particular services they may have rendered to the University, identify potential recipients of honorary degrees whilst also promoting diversity, conducting such due diligence as it deems necessary in order to identify potential recipients.
  4. Invite potential recipients to accept the honour, and report to the Senate and the Council.
  5. Consider the revocation of an honorary degree where the actions or honorary degree recipient warrant such an exceptional step.  Where the Committee agrees the revocation of an honorary degree, it shall make a recommendation accordingly to Senate and the Council and inform the degree recipient.

1. The membership of the Committee shall comprise:

  • President and Vice-Chancellor (Chair): Professor Jane Norman

  • Vice-Chair of Council: Sonya Leydecker
  • Pro-Vice-Chancellor: Professor Katherine Linehan
  • Provost (UNNC): Professor Jonathan Garibaldi
  • Provost (UNM): Professor David FitzPatrick
  • Two Faculty Pro-Vice-Chancellors: Professor Jeremy Gregory, Professor Zoe Wilson
  • Director of Communications and Advocacy: Louella Houldcroft
  • Director of Advancement: Jonathan Ashford-Smith
  • Student Representative: Alice Eley (Community Officer)
  • Secretary: Chief Governance and Risk Officer: Jason Carter

In attendance:

  • Chief Operating Officer: Chris Hunt
  • Academic Registrar: Chris Hulse

2. The Committee may invite members of UEB and other officers as necessary to attend as business requires.

Quorum

    The quoracy for the Committe is six to include at least one external Council member.
