Current Research

The primary focus of my work has been the regulation of drinking and drunkenness, looking at the ways in which everyday urban life is shaped by forms of municipal governance such as alcohol licensing. Ongoing research topics include the temperance movement, the regulation of drinking during the First World War, and the links between alcoholism and mental ill-health in the early years of the twentieth century.

I have expanded my interest in governance to consider the management of rivers. With my colleague Dr Rachel Dishington, I have been researching the role of the River Leen in shaping the development of Nottingham. Our exhibition, The Leen: Nottingham's River, curated with Manuscripts and Special Collections, is on display at the Weston Gallery, Lakeside Arts, until March 2026.

This is the second such exhibition I have curated. , was exhibited in 2022.
