The School of English has particular expertise in, and welcomes applications from, students wishing to undertake postgraduate research in a wide range of areas:

• Text-editing and literary history from the medieval period to the present day (including pre- and post-Conquest, the Renaissance, the Long Eighteenth Century, Romanticism, the Nineteenth Century, Modernism, and the Contemporary)
• Regional literatures and cultures, especially Irish and Scottish writing
• Global and Postcolonial literatures, including the literature of British India
• Individual authors including: Jonathan Swift, Robert Southey, Charles Dickens, Henry James, Rudyard Kipling, Oscar Wilde, D. H. Lawrence, Seán O’Casey, Virginia Woolf, James Joyce, Geoffrey Hill, David Dabydeen, Caryl Phillips, Zadie Smith, Angela Carter
• Drama of all periods, including drama as performance, playwriting, digital performance, theatre history and historiography, Shakespeare and the Shakespeare Apocrypha, Futurism, modernism, theories of reception, study of audiences, theatrical place and space
• Applied linguistics, English language teaching, literary linguistics, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, corpus linguistics, professional communication, language, gender and sexuality
• Historical language study of English and other Germanic languages
• Name-studies, including English and Scandinavian place-names, and personal names
• Older Scots language, literature, culture and book history, and also Scottish Latin, from c.1350 to c.1700; individual authors include James I, Robert Henryson, Gavin Douglas, David Lynsay, Marie Maitland
• Old Norse and Viking Studies, including runology, eddic and skaldic poetry, place- and personal names, saga studies, and Vikings in Britain and Ireland
• Health Humanities, including the study of health and illness in Early Medieval England and the Scandinavian Middle Ages, studies of healthcare texts and disease, the language of healthcare, multimodal approaches to health communication, and the critical study of gender-based health issues 
• Creative Writing
