PhD in Applied Linguistics: #WomensGrowth: A feminist critical discourse analysis on the Chinese short video platform Douyin

I have been funded to attend and present at the Global China Studies Early Career Network Annual Conference 2026 at the University of York. The conference this year is about Rethinking China in a Changing Global Order: Governance, Justice, and Social Change. Many works were presented and discussed in multiple panels concerning Chinese studies in relation to economics, politics, language, and media, etc.

The RKEC funding allowed me to achieve the main aim of presenting part of my thesis chapter and getting feedback. The discussion with the senior discussant from University of York and PhD students or researchers across the world was inspiring and helpful in improving my research and writing. The funding for me to attend the conference also supported me in connecting with people studying applied linguistics concerning social issues in China, such as gender, which allowed me to develop my academic profile and communicate my research beyond my home institution, as I specified in the application.

The Inaugural International Women's Writing Conference at Falmouth University was a meeting of female-identifying academics, sharing research and participating in workshops. I held a 90-minute interactive session on Confession in Fictional Narratives, particularly in the short story. I presented on my findings about how female protagonists use the narrative as a place for confession, and therein the reader as a confidante. I supported participants to fictionalise their own confessions, paying particular attention to perspective and tone.

It was an excellent chance for me to share my research with fellow academics, learn from their research, and facilitate a workshop with postgraduate students (something I haven't yet had the opportunity to do). Overall, an inspiring three-day experience where I forged new, international connections.

PhD English: Dialogic Minds: A stylistic study of the embedded discourse in interior monologue in James Joyce’s Ulysses
I attended the 2026 Poetics and Linguistics Association (PALA) Conference at Uppsala University, Sweden, from 19–22 August 2026. I presented a paper entitled ‘Dialogic Minds: A Stylistic Analysis of Multi-Voiced Interior Monologue in Joyce’s Ulysses’, based on my ongoing PhD research into embedded voices in interior monologue.

The RKEC funding covered part of my accommodation costs during the conference and therefore made my in-person participation possible. It enabled me to achieve the main objectives set out in my application. Presenting my research to an international stylistics audience allowed me to test the clarity of my analytical framework and receive specialist feedback relevant to my thesis chapter. Participation in the wider conference programme also enabled me to engage with current research in stylistics, discuss my work with researchers in related areas, and strengthen academic
