Beyond the Grade is a new initiative by the School of English to provide students with more platforms and opportunities to showcase their work in inclusive, applied and creative ways that move beyond the grades they receive. On 5^th March 2025 the School of English will celebrate the outstanding work produced by its students. With Autumn Semester completed, and assessments submitted, we’d love to begin by showcasing the work our students are most proud of, regardless of the grade it received. Later in the year we will be introducing other exciting opportunities to get involved with including new Word on Word blog opportunities, the launch of a Digital showcase to make student work accessible online on a permanent webpage, and in a physical exhibition along our corridors.

We welcome submissions for 10 minute presentations, a poster or short video on all areas of English:

• English Literature
• English Language and Applied Linguistics
• Drama and Performance
• Medieval Languages and Literatures
• Creative Writing

Submissions may include (but are not limited to):

• An essay or dissertation extract
• A piece of drama
• A pre-existing presentation
• Works of creative writing (poetry, prose, reflections)
• Something else – surprise us!

Why participate?

• Prepare yourself for further study, where presentations and conferences are commonplace
• Gain experience in delivering presentations in a non-pressured, non-assessed environment
• Boost your CV and make yourself all the more employable with experience in public speaking, delivering presentations and independent research
• Participate in an entertaining, educational and varied event
• Network with students and staff with interests both varied and similar to your own
• Lastly, but most importantly, this is your opportunity to show off, to impress; to channel your enthusiasm and passion for the subject that you love!
