Starting university can be a big change, and our Peer Mentor Scheme is here to help. Get support and advice from experienced students, meet new people, build confidence, and find answers to your questions about university life and your course. Interested?
What do Peer Mentors do?
Our Peer Mentors are trained current students who support new Undergraduate students as they settle into university life. They can answer questions, share their experiences, and provide a friendly, approachable source of guidance. Feeling comfortable and connected early on can help reduce anxiety and allow students to focus on their studies.
Peer Mentors are part of a wider support network and can signpost students to Personal Tutors, Student Support, and Wellbeing services where needed. In the School of English, mentors and mentees are matched based on mentees' preferences.
‘There are some issues that fall in between what your friends can help you with and what you want to ask a lecturer you have never met before, and the mentoring scheme fills those gaps wonderfully. Thanks to my mentor, on my third day at Nottingham, I already knew everything there was to know about the library, the online portal and how to make the most of my seminars. My mentor is a wonderful person who is incredibly helpful; they have made the difference between my first weeks at Nottingham being unproductive and achieving a good balance of social and academic life’.

How do I contact my mentor?
The Peer Mentor Scheme is coordinated by the Education and Student Experience (ESE) Team. Before you arrive, we'll contact you with information about the School of English Peer Mentors so you can choose the mentor who best matches your preferences.
Once you've been matched, your mentor will get in touch by email. This is your chance to ask any questions you have about university life, your course, or settling in. When you arrive at university, you'll also have the opportunity to meet your mentor in person and get to know each other.
