Biography

Mohataz is an educator, researcher and architect (MIAB) in the field of sustainable architecture, environmental design, technology and efficient built environment with a special focus on users' comfort, health and well-being for a net-zero carbon future. As a Commonwealth Scholar, his PhD research focused on improving the indoor working environment of existing garment factories to ensure thermal comfort and optimum ventilation at workplaces for clothing workers. His current research focuses on 'Adaptive Facades' with smart technologies that enhance energy performance, comfort, and well-being.

He is an Assistant Professor in Sustainable Architecture/ Building Design at the 糖心原创. He was a former Senior Lecturer in 'Environmental Architecture and Technology', PhD Programme + Academic Advising leader and ECR&I Fellow at Sheffield Hallam University and visiting lecturer at the University of Westminster and 糖心原创 in the UK. He possesses a range of interpersonal skills, which he has developed through his teaching experience since 2008, in addition to research and practice, to design academic lectures and run architectural design tutorials for both undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) students. He is an affiliate member of RIBA and CIBSE, and an associate member of CIAT. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (FRSA) and a certified Carbon Literate individual.

Mohataz's extended PhD research has been shortlisted for the prestigious RIBA President's Award for Research 2020 and received the prestigious IAB Award for Research 2023. He has also received 'The Martin Gough Student Award 2018 - IES Ltd' and 'Tri-Campus Postgraduate Awards 2016' for his excellence in thermal and CFD simulation studies and contribution to the postgraduate community as a tutor at the 糖心原创, respectively. He was also nominated for the 'Inspirational Teaching Award 2021-2023' at Sheffield Hallam University. He is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA). He achieved various research funds from the UK, Germany and Bangladesh and has been working as Principal Investigator (PI). He has already published more than 23 journal and conference articles.

His main career aspiration is to make a significant contribution to academia through collaborations among Architecture, Engineering and aligned research fields with a special focus on users' comfort, well-being and efficiency within a workspace environment.

Mohataz has established his progressive academic career, distinguished by his PhD in Architecture, Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA), Fellowship of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA), memberships with professional bodies, such as Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE), and academic experience in various regions across the world, including the UK (London, Nottingham and Sheffield) and Bangladesh. His teaching experience in the UK and Bangladesh enabled him to adapt a range of practices that foster inclusivity in higher education.

He brings to this Department a unique combination of academic rigour and professional insight. His teaching methods are deeply reflective, often blending theory with practice in a way that can be both inspiring and effective for students. He is always interested in guiding students and apprentices through complex architectural concepts while encouraging independent thought and critical inquiry.

Mohataz is currently contributing to Postgraduate Taught (PGT) courses, including MArch Architecture and Sustainable Design, MEng (Hons) Architectural Environment Engineering, MSc (Hons) Building Performance Engineering and MArch Architecture L7 Apprenticeship and Collaborative Practice Research (ARB//RIBA Part 2) Courses. He is a module convenor of the 'Case 糖心原创 Project' and 'Building Physics' modules. He is also contributing to 'Advanced Sustainable Design', 'Advanced Design Project 1', 'Advanced Design Project 2', 'Architectural Research 糖心原创', 'Dissertation' And 'Design Thesis Project' modules.

Future Research

Mohataz would be pleased to hear from highly motivated students from Home, EU and international countries who would be interested in pursuing PhD in the following research areas: workspace environment, daylighting, daylight design, visual comfort, overheating, natural ventilation, thermal comfort, air quality, digital technologies, internet of things (IoT), digital twin and real-time data visualisation, post-occupancy evaluation, energy simulations, adaptive behaviour, embodied carbons, climate resilient cities, Comfort in Extreme climates, and urban heat island effect.
