My studio unit, Brink Territories, focuses on people forgotten by society and responds to real world issues. This year we have aimed to bring Leeds’ rich history of weaving into the cities wider socio-political context.

I have always been shocked by the negative betrayal of refugees and asylum-seeking people in the UK media. When I learnt that Leeds’ is a recognised dispersal city and a registered ‘City of Sanctuary’, I saw this as an opportunity to bring together the unit ethos and my own interest in support for marginalised groups. My proposal was to create a support centre for displaced women in Leeds. The centre is an opportunity for empowerment and integration through building friendships. Perhaps a place to weave into Leeds. My programme also includes services found to be particularly lacking for those housed in hotels.

I chose a site that was once a green oasis. As part of my scheme, I re-introduced this with a public green roof and biodiversity integrated throughout. I also took inspiration from popular architecture in many refugees’ home countries such as perforated walls, overhung entrances and courtyards.
