Title: "Immigration and the rise of left-wing movements: Evidence from Argentina"
AbstractThis paper examines how immigrants to Argentina shape electoral outcomes in the Age of Mass Migration. I combine census data on European immigration withnewly digitised returns from national elections. Using a shift-share instrument, I find that European immigration increases electoral support for left-wing parties at tthe expense of the right. Their political influence operates through social capital and local political infrastructure, ruling out alternatives like voter literacy andurbanisation. These findings highlight how local organisation enable non-citizen immigrants to influence electoral politics.
