School of Economics

About Us

Welcome from the Head of SchoolKimberley Scharf

The School of Economics combines excellence and innovation in teaching with an international reputation for rigorous and topical research of the highest quality.

Economics affects each and every one of us, regardless of where we live or what we do. Concerned with how we use our resources, trade internationally, manage our economic growth and thrive as a society, economists analyse a wide variety of issues. They question the male/female pay gap; identify how government policies affect us; ask why some countries grow faster than others; and examine the everyday choices we make. That is why we are passionate about the subject.

We offer broad programmes of study, combining all of the core analytical and quantitative techniques required by modern economics graduates. We aim to provide a stimulating environment for learning, without losing the friendly and informal atmosphere for which Nottingham is renowned.

We are proud of our high rankings across league tables including:

Top 40 worldwide and 6th in the UK

Top 100 in the world for economics

Ranked 9th in the UK for economics

Top 90 in the world for business and economics

2nd in the world in the field of cognitive and behavioural economics

5th in the UK and 99% of research output

ranked world-leading or internationally excellent

Our academics are experts in their respective fields and have considerable research and policy experience. Our research is incredibly important to us and underpins everything we do. It's recognised on an international scale; our seven research centres are currently conducting influential studies across the discipline, with hubs in China and Malaysia, and having an impact on the decisions of policy makers around the world.

The for example, is one of the largest of its kind in the world - its academics are devoted to analysing the impact of globalisation and economic policy and advise the Treasury, World Bank and World Trade Organization.

A Nottingham economics graduate is highly sought after in the job market and well-placed to progress to graduate study. A recent report concluded that economics graduates from Nottingham can expect a significant boost to their average earnings and they will be following in the footsteps of some truly exceptional alumni.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to get in touch.
