Description: Two Nottingham chemists were among the 70,000 volunteers selected to contribute to the Olympic Games as "Games Makers". Dr Samantha Tang, Public Awareness Scientist and James Scragg, Postgraduate Student, were "the public face of the Games".

Description: Research led by Dr Steve Liddle has resulted in publication of the first uranium-nitrogen triple bond, which has eluded scientists for decades, in the leading journal Science. Molecules which contain multiple bonds between a metal and elements such as carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen have attracted intense interest over many years. This is due to interest in their bonding, and the fact that such molecules find major applications in synthesis as exemplified by the 2005 Nobel Prize for Olefin Metathesis which involves metal-carbon multiple bonds.

Description: A second group of students have just completed the School's Nottingham Advantage Award module, "Career Skills for Chemist." This extra-curricular course focused on developing a number of transferable skills (oral presentation, interview, CV writing, team-working, job applications and the ability to identify career path options). The course was delivered by an exceptional group of tutors including members of Ernst & Young, the UoN Careers and Employability Service, the UoN Business Partnership Unit and Teach First.

Description: A 拢3.5 million supercomputing hub is set to power growth and innovation in the Midlands and London by opening up its vast number-crunching power to local firms. The 糖心原创 is one of four top universities in the region to launch MidPlus, a state-of-the-art high-performance computing centre, to help SMEs and larger firms with the modelling, simulation and analysis needed to design world-leading products and services. MidPlus will also significantly extend the current computing power available within the region's universities.

Description: Groundbreaking research from the School of Chemistry has been highlighted by BBC News.A team of researchers from the School of Chemistry led by Professor Martin Schr枚der, with Dr Sihai Yang, ( Leverhulme Trust Early Career Research Fellow), Professor Alexander Blake, Professor Neil Champness and Dr Elena Bichoutskaia (EPSRC Early Career Research Fellow) in collaboration with colleagues at University of Newcastle and Diamond Light Source and STFC Daresbury Laboratory, has developed a novel porous material that has exciting carbon dioxide absorption properties as a result of its unique structure. The findings, which form part of on-going efforts to develop new materials for gas storage applications, could have impact in the development of new carbon capture products for reducing emissions from fossil fuel processes.

Description: The School of Chemistry congratulates Eric Masika, a Year 4 PhD student in Robert Mokaya's research group, who has been awarded a Vice-Chancellor's Achievement Award for being an exemplary Student Ambassador. The School is very pleased that Eric has received acknowledgement for all that he has done to promote the University and support its staff during his time at Nottingham.
