Why "Quick Apply" is Holding You Back

As a Careers Adviser I am seeing a growing trend: over reliance on “Quick Apply” buttons and AI-generated CVs and cover letters.
I understand the appeal. When the job market feels competitive, and it seems like everyone else is doing it, shortcuts feel tempting. But here’s the reality:

The Myth of Easy Applications

There’s a belief that submitting a high volume of applications, usually supported by AI,  will eventually lead to success. In reality, it often leads to the opposite.

Many applicants end up blending into a mass of similar CVs with the same phrasing, structure and generic content. Recruiters can spot them immediately, and when everything sounds the same, nothing stands out.
Even more importantly, most applications never reach a human at all. Around 75% of CVs submitted through Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) are never seen by a recruiter. These systems filter for keywords, structure and clarity, not creativity.

What Actually Works in Today’s Market

Understand the system before trying to beat it. Use standard headings such as Professional Summary, Education, Work Experience, Certifications, and Extracurricular Activities. Keep formatting simple and structured.

Tailoring the content matters, but keep it realistic. Why not create strong template CVs for each career area or role you are interested in and then tailor these for individual roles. Avoid both sending the same generic ‘perfected’ CV everywhere and rewriting from scratch each time.

Move beyond labour market information. Labour market information tells you where opportunities are, but job market intelligence helps you compete for them. This includes understanding recruitment processes, employer expectations, and gaining insight through research and networking. So reach out to the hiring manager or the alum that works there. That inside information will help you stand out.

Use AI as a tool, not a substitute. It can help with keywords and ideas, but your CV should always sound authentic and reflect you.

Standing Out in a Crowded Market

Recruiters recognise AI-heavy applications. If you write your own, tailor thoughtfully, and show real insight into the employer, you will stand out.

Final Thought

Stop asking what’s easiest and start asking what works. The goal isn’t to apply more, but to apply better. With a strategy that works for both the system and the human reader. The job market is tougher, your approach needs to get tougher— not quicker.
