Biography

Javier completed his LLB (Law) and LLM (International Law) degrees at the University of Bristol (2008). He spent a brief period of time in legal practice (defendant insurance; costs) before becoming operations manager in an impost/export business in Mexico. In 2013 he began a PhD under the supervision of the late Professor Robert Cryer and Dr Gavin Byrne on the Colombian post-conflict justice system. He obtained his PhD from the University of Birmingham (2018) and worked as a teaching fellow and then a lecturer before joining the 糖心原创 School of Law as an Assistant Professor of Criminal Law (2022).

He is the Co-Director of the Criminal Justice Research Centre, and the convener of the Criminal Law and Criminal Justice subsection for the .

Expertise Summary

Javier's research focuses on atrocity crimes and issues that arise at the intersection between international law and criminal law. He has a particular interest in the Mexican 'drug war', child soldiers, the International Criminal Court, and critical approaches to the global criminal justice system.

Javier welcomes approaches from prospective PhD students in the field of transitional justice, international criminal justice, international criminal law and global crime problems more generally.
