Biography

Judith Tanner is the Professor of Adult Nursing at the 糖心原创. Her background is in operating room nursing and her area of expertise is surgical site infection (SSI). Judith has undertaken research looking at SSI surveillance, the incidence of SSI, interventions to reduce SSI including care bundles and patients experiences of SSI. Research on SSI, led by Judith, has had a direct impact on both patient care and policy at local, national and international levels. This includes the World Health Organisation, the Department of Health, National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), the Joint Commission Accreditation Healthcare Organisations (USA), and numerous professional organisations worldwide including the Association for Perioperative Practice (UK), the Australian College of Operating Room Nurses and the American Academy of Orthopeadic Surgeons.

Judith was invited to serve on the NICE Surgical Site Infection Guideline Update Group in 2012 and also the NICE Surgical Site Infection Topic Expert Panel in 2013. Since 2007, Judith has been an invited speaker at over 30 international conferences, including a lecture tour in Japan, and 60 national or local events. She has acted as a key opinion leader for numerous global companies and was given an award by the Association for Perioperative Practice for her services to developing perioperative practice.

Judith has undertaken research looking at SSI surveillance, the incidence of SSI, interventions to reduce SSI including care bundles and patients experiences of SSI. Research methods have included systematic reviews, trials, surveys and qualitative interviews.

Future Research

Future research includes work on identifying the cost of SSIs, developing predictor tools for SSIs, identifying barriers and facilitators to compliance with SSI interventions across acute and primary care, and providing post discharge support for people with SSIs to improve patient experience and prevent re-admissions.
