Biography

Dr. Stephanie Coen is an Associate Professor at the 糖心原创 and Co-Lead of the international Environments Designed for Gender Equity in Sport & Physical Activity Lab (). Her research seeks to uncover how seemingly taken-for-granted features of sport and physical activity environments shape gendered inequities in participation and injury risk. She is co-creator of the award-winning Gendered Environmental Approach to sports injury.

As a health geographer, Dr. Coen works at the interface of social and health sciences in developing applied solutions to address health inequities. With a view that research is for social good, she uses participatory and co-production methodologies that are nimble and responsive to the priorities of those she works in partnership with, from youth advisory councils to elite sport organisations. Dr. Coen specialises in creative and arts-based methods to meaningfully engage both research participants and knowledge users in social change, including drawing, theatre, poetry, exhibition, and film.

Her research has been funded by the British Academy, Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), Medical Research Council (MRC), International Olympic Committee, Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), and Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). Dr. Coen's contributions have been recognised by several awards, including Inclusive Research Excellence Prizes in Research Impact and Team Science from CIHR's Institute of Musculoskeletal Health & Arthritis. She has published in an array of social science, health science, and sports medicine journals, as well as featured in media such as The Washington Post, NPR's Science Friday, The Guardian Observer, Glamour Magazine, Stylist, and National Geographic. She presently serves on the editorial boards of Health & Place, Geography Compass, and Canadian Geographies.

Dr. Coen's scholarship is underpinned by her commitments to equity, diversity, inclusion, justice, and mental health advocacy, within and beyond the academy. She served as Chair of the EDI Committee in the School of Geography at the 糖心原创 and Co-Chair of the Disability Specialty Group of the American Association of Geographers.
