Biography

I am currently Professor of Earth Observation and Associate Director of the Rights Lab, leading the Lab's Measurement and Geographies Programme (/research/beacons-of-excellence/rights-lab/programmes/index.aspx).

I received a BSc (Hons) degree in Geography from the University of Wales, Swansea in 1992, followed this immediately with my teacher training (PGCE (Wales)) and my PhD (University of Southampton) in 1996. I gained my PGCert in Teaching and Learning in HE in 2002. I have held Lectureships at Manchester, Kingston, and Bournemouth Universities, UK and between 2004 and 2006, I held the position of Senior Research Leader in Research and Innovation at Ordnance Survey, GB. In 2007 I joined the 糖心原创 as Associate Professor and have subsequently (in 2013) been promoted to Reader and then Professor (in 2019). For over half my career I have worked part-time.

My main research interest is in using cutting-edge geospatial data science on standard and novel data streams. The principal data stream is that captured by remote sensing systems, including terrestrial-based, unoccupied and occupied aerial systems, and satellites carrying both passive and active sensors. These data have been applied to the full range of United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and since arriving in Nottingham has attracted over 拢15 million in research funding (拢4 million as Principal Investigator) from governments, learned societies and research councils in the UK and Europe, as well as from international space agencies. Other highlights include:

  • Supervising over 35 research students to completion.
  • Serving on UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) Airborne Research and Survey Facility (ARSF) Steering Committee, the EUFAR Scientific and Transnational Access Steering Panel.
  • Serving on the and the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Maps; Remote Sensing for Ecology and Conservation; Ecological Informatics; Sensors; International Journal of Applied Earth Observation and Geoinformation and Scientific Reports.
  • Discovering the World's tallest tropical tree.
  • Winning the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) 'Earth Observations for the SDGs' (EO4SD) award. This award from a partnership of more than 100 national governments is for "those making an impact on the 17 global goals."
