Biography

Dr Kevin Webb is Associate Professor in Applied Optics and Electrophysiology in the Optics & Photonics Group, School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering, where he directs the Hydrophotonics Research Laboratory.

His research develops novel optical imaging and electrophysiological instrumentation to visualise biological processes, from sub-cellular water transport to drug transport across living tissue barriers, and translates those inventions into products, platforms and companies.

At a glance: As Principal or Co-Investigator, Dr Webb has brought 拢1.73M of research income into the Faculty of Engineering, averaging 拢152k per year over a decade and 拢187k per year over the last five. He is imaging and engineering lead on the 鈧9.8M ERC Synergy HYDROSENSING, and Imaging Lead on the $7.5M NIH TraCe-bMPS US national centre (co-developer of the 碌SIM tissue chip, which is on the FDA Modernization Act standardisation pathway). He is co-founder of the needle-free drug-delivery spinout Permean Ltd, has commercialised photonics with Cairn Research (Faversham, Kent) and Etaluma (San Diego), and sustains nine active industrial partnerships across six countries, contributing to the University's interdisciplinary research and knowledge-exchange priorities across healthcare, agri-food and clean energy.

Dr Webb trained as an electrophysiologist at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, where he was the first to isolate and functionally characterise in vitro the terminally-differentiated fibre cells of the ocular lens, a unique tissue that is itself an optical component. Following a post-doc at University College London in live cell imaging, he joined Nottingham in 2008, applying surface plasmon imaging and electrophysiology to primary neurons, and was awarded a Royal Academy of Engineering/EPSRC Research Fellowship in 2010. His program now unites photonics, biophysics and bioengineering, with hydrodynamic Raman imaging (HydRa) as a signature capability spanning bioengineering, biomedical science and agrotech.

Expertise Summary

Optical imaging and instrumentation design; label-free multimodal real-time imaging; plant real-time hydrodynamic Raman (HydRa) imaging; microphysiological systems (tissue-on-chip: 碌SIM); epithelial electrophysiology, barrier transport and drug delivery; and research commercialisation - from instrument productisation to spinout formation and IP.

Current Research

The Hydrophotonics Research Lab develops optical imaging and electrophysiological instrumentation to visualise water and molecular transport in living systems, and translates it across sectors. Current strands include: imaging and engineering lead on the 鈧9.8M ERC Synergy HYDROSENSING, applying hydrodynamic water imaging to plant water-stress sensing across four nations; co-development of the 碌SIM microphysiological (organ-on-chip) platform as Imaging Lead of the $7.5M NIH TraCe-bMPS US national centre, a candidate for FDA standardisation of barrier-tissue drug screening - one of the UoN 100 ways to change the world. Needle-free macromolecular drug delivery being advanced to commercialisation through the spinout Permean Ltd (co-Founder); commercialisation of label-free and multimodal imaging with Cairn Research, Etaluma and CustomScopes; and world-first measurement of nanoparticulate emissions from hydrogen-fuelled engines with Lubrizol and JCB. Techniques span coherent Raman imaging, real-time label-free imaging, and electrophysiology.

Past Research

Kevin trained as an electrophysiologist at Auckland, and was the first to isolate and functionally characterise in vitro the terminally-differentiated fibre cells that form the bulk of the ocular lens, confirming at the cellular level the ion-transporting properties of these specialised cells within the connected syncytium of the lens. His early Nottingham work, supported by a Royal Academy of Engineering/EPSRC Fellowship, applied novel imaging and electrophysiological methods to transparent ocular tissues, including the cornea, retina and retinal pigment epithelium, establishing the epithelial-transport imaging approaches that underpin his current programme.

Future Research

The Hydrophotonics Research Lab is developing HydRa (hydrodynamic Raman imaging) as a 糖心原创 signature capability: real-time water imaging in the canonical model systems of biology, and water imaging as a novel high-throughput endpoint for drug screening in barrier tissues-on-chip. Priorities include scaling the plant water-imaging programme, extending the 碌SIM platform toward regulatory-standard drug screening, and progressing the Permean drug-delivery platform toward clinical translation, alongside a growing portfolio of interdisciplinary imaging partnerships across healthcare, agri-food and clean energy
