Support for PhD Students

Research students benefit from the support of our postgraduate careers service to explore and develop career options.

Our research students pursue careers in academia and the private and public sectors. A number of our current staff are former research students.

We offer individual careers consultations, skill development events, guest lectures and an online careers resource area.

Students also receive support planning for a career in academia or industry. The University's Graduate School offers career management sessions for research students too.

Sarah PhD (2015)

Job: Lecturer in Marketing at Royal Holloway, University of London

The postgraduate career service was always extremely approachable and happy to offer help and support. They reviewed my CV and helped me improve it and I worked with them to polish my interview technique. As well as building my confidence, the careers service gave me practical advice about what key academic skills I needed to demonstrate at interviews.

My advice to students is to grow your networks. Make an effort to attend events and conferences and to introduce yourself to people who work in departments that you are interested in. Make sure that you apply at the right time. Although it was great moving straight from the PhD into a full-time lectureship, I completed my VIVA and corrections during term-time. Juggling these commitments and a full teaching load was rather demanding!
