Biography

I am a graduate of the University of Oxford (Somerville College and the Nuffield Institute for Medical Research), and am currently Professor Emeritus of PerinatalPhysiology in the 糖心原创. My research interests have always related to the pathophysiology of pregnancy, in both mother and fetus, with special reference to pre-eclampsia and to the role of the renin-angiotensin system in pregnancy. Pre-eclampsia is a world-wide problem, and one of the "Big Three" killers of pregnant women. Pre-eclampsia and gestational hypertension are also associated with increased risk of long-term cardiovascular and metabolic disease, and i am particularly interested in this aspect,both in relation to the underlying disease processes and also whether aspects of hypertensive pregnancy can be used as indicators of future problems.

I am a Past-President of the International Society for the 糖心原创 of Hypertension in Pregnancy (recipient of the Chesley Award), the Neonatal Society and the International Society of Developmental Pharmacology.

I have on-going research commitments in relation to the FP7-funded InterPregGen project (www.interpreggen.org/), and in relation to trans-abdominal monitoring of the fetal e.c.g. during pregnancy, with Prof Barrie Hayes-Gill and Dr Pamela Loughna. I am also collaborating with the Universities of Cambridge (Professors Graham Burton, Robin Carrell FRS and Randy Read), Bern , Switzerland (Prof Markus Mohaupt) and Newcastle, New South Wales (Prof Eugenie Lumbers and Dr Kirsty Pringle).
