Sensing and Inspection
Sensing and Inspection is a multidisciplinary research strand focused on developing intelligent technologies for measuring, monitoring and assessing components in complex manufacturing and maintenance environments.
Our work combines advanced imaging and non-destructive evaluation with robotics, multi-modal artificial intelligence, videogrammetry, structurally integrated sensors and wearable vision systems.
By enabling faster, more adaptable and more reliable inspection, the strand aims to reduce inspection bottlenecks and equipment downtime while limiting the need for people to enter confined or hazardous spaces.

Development of Cognitive Structures for Implementation on Advanced Manufacturing and Repair Environment

This project develops fully 3D-printed capacitive sensors in which the sensing function is built directly into the structure rather than attached afterwards. Using dual-material FDM, carbon-based conductive PLA and insulating PLA are printed together to form a compliant beam–mass structure with embedded electrodes. The printed geometry is designed to convert local vibration, acceleration, and deformation into measurable capacitance changes, while a dual-channel differential configuration and algorithm approach help reduce common environmental disturbances.
Through iterative design, modelling, fabrication trials, and controlled testing, the work examines both the potential and limitations of structure-led sensing, including resonance behaviour, baseline drift, manufacturing tolerance, and signal reliability. The printed sensing structures are also explored in a milling-fixture environment to understand how process-related vibration and deformation can be transmitted and identified. The project contributes a practical route towards low-cost, customisable, structurally integrated sensing for monitoring and smart manufacturing applications.
Wearable eyeglove system for measurement and localization in confined environments

This thesis introduces two low‑cost wearable vision‑glove systems—TriCam and BiCam EyeGlove—for inspection and measurement in confined industrial environments. By embedding micro‑cameras on the fingers, the gloves enable flexible visual access where rigid tools cannot reach. The TriCam system uses three cameras and an ArUco marker to estimate variable baselines in real time, while BiCam switches between inspection and measurement modes using contact‑pad constraints. A new calibration and localization framework is developed to handle disjointed camera configurations and low‑feature environments. Experiments show <5% measurement error at 500 mm distance and 2.28% error in near‑industrial spaces, demonstrating strong potential for in‑situ inspection.
