SDG goal 14 - Life Below Water

Water Works is a group of more than 140 multidisciplinary researchers from across the university’s campuses in the UK, Malaysia and China. The group’s research informed the Nottingham City Council’s Carbon Neutral 2028 action plan and has driven the water resilience agenda nationally and internationally, including UN calls for action of plastic pollution in the world’s oceans.

Revealing the hidden heroes of healthy rivers

A Surprising Hero: the Freshwater Mussel is an animated documentary inspired by research from Dr Alexandra Zieritz in the School of Geography. Produced through the EU‑funded CONFREMU network, the film raises public awareness of the vital role mussels play in river ecosystems — filtering up to 40 litres of water a day and supporting biodiversity across lakes and waterways.
