The university’s Energy Institute brings together 150 researchers from across our faculties of Engineering, Science and Social Science and attracts significant funding from government and industry to respond to societal challenges around energy. The university’s carbon reduction targets are underpinned by reducing demand and wastage for energy, improving the energy efficiency of our systems and spaces and by engaging our community on our journey towards sustainability.

Metal warf
Turning metal waste into a catalyst for hydrogen

Hydrogen is vital to future clean energy, but production relies on fossil fuels and precious metals. Our researchers have transformed metal鈥憌aste swarf into an efficient catalyst that uses one-tenth the platinum while upcycling industrial waste.

Greener halls

The Go! Switch Off campaign encourages students and staff to reduce energy use, supported by the Greener Halls Competition. In autumn 2023, participating halls saved over 31,400 kWh鈥攅nough to power 90 fridges for a year.

Our Energy for Business project supported a range of businesses on low-carbon and energy innovation projects, from exploring the return of hydroelectric power to a UNESCO-listed cotton mill, to an app to help universities reduce their carbon footprint.

Our zero carbon strategy

The university aims to reduce carbon emissions by 63% by 2030, with net zero carbon by 2040 and absolute zero carbon by 2050. Optimising energy use, transitioning to low-carbon energy, sustainable travel and reducing waste are key to these goals.
