Three A level, or equivalent qualifications.

A level combinations where more than one subject out of three or two subjects out of four are non-traditional or practical (such as art, art and design, computer and information technology, film studies, dance, drama, theatre studies, graphics, media and communication studies, and sports and physical education studies) are not normally accepted.

General studies, critical thinking, citizenship, global perspectives and research, and thinking skills

GCSEs

Applicants will need a minimum of five GCSEs at grade 4 (C) or above, which must include English.

For those applicants who qualify for a contextual offer, we will be looking for a minimum of grade 4 (C) in GCSE English, but can offer more flexibility for the remaining grades achieved.

If you have not taken GCSEs, but have studied equivalent international qualifications, you will not be disadvantaged and we will look for the same grade range to have been achieved in the qualifications you have taken. If you will require a student visa but have not studied GCSE/IGCSEs and do not hold another suitable English language qualification, you should expect an IELTS condition to be included within any offer made to you.

IB score

34 points overall or 666 in 3 HL certificates

RQF BTEC Nationals

• RQF Level 3 BTEC National Extended Diploma (applied human biology, applied law, applied psychology, applied science, forensic and criminal investigation, business personal and business finance, sport and exercise science, uniformed public services and health and social care) D*DD.
• RQF Level 3 BTEC National Diploma (applied human biology, applied law, applied psychology, applied science, forensic and criminal investigation, business personal and business finance, sport and exercise science, uniformed public services and health and social care) D*D plus one A level grade A (in a traditional subject).
• RQF Level 3 BTEC National Extended Certificate (any subject) D plus two A levels grade AA (Traditional subjects preferred but other combinations will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Doubling up will not be allowed - business BTEC and business A level for example.)

Access to HE Diploma

Access to HE Diploma in Law with 36 Level 3 credits at Distinction and 9 Level 3 credits at Merit. Other Access to HE Social Science subjects to be considered on a case-by-case basis

We make contextual offers to students who may have experienced barriers that have restricted progress at school or college. Our standard contextual offer is usually one grade lower than the advertised entry requirements, and our enhanced contextual offer is usually two grades lower than the advertised entry requirements. To qualify for a contextual offer, you must have Home/UK fee status and meet specific criteria – check if you’re eligible.

When considering your application, we will look for evidence that you will be able to fulfil the objectives of the course and achieve the standards required. We will take into account a range of factors additional to, and in some cases instead of, formal exam results.

Selection process

Due to the volume of applications we receive to our law courses from highly qualified candidates we operate a ‘gathered field’ selection process. This involves holding applications received by the UCAS equal consideration deadline in January and assessing them in one go. It will take us a bit longer to make decisions on applications, but this ensures that we are able to treat all applications fairly and make offers to the most suitable applicants. We aim to make decisions as soon as possible and applicants should expect to hear from us by 31 March 2026 at the very latest.

Resit policy

Our undergraduate programmes typically require students to study four subjects at the same time, therefore the School of Law can be confident that by successfully completing three A levels (or equivalent) within one examination period, applicants demonstrate an ability to manage the significant workload involved in the undergraduate study of law. Therefore applicants should sit or resit three A levels (or equivalent) in one examination period.

Applicants who have taken an A level (or equivalent) a year early if they have been fast-tracked by their school or college, can be made an offer based on completing a further two A levels (or equivalents) to meet the entry requirements. Extenuating circumstances may also lead to a relaxation of this policy. 

On this course, you can apply to switch to a four-year degree and spend your third year studying abroad in Australia, Canada, China, Europe, New Zealand, South Africa, Singapore or the USA. Teaching is typically in English, but there may be opportunities to study in another language if you are sufficiently fluent.  

Add an extra year to your degree to understand the latest in data analytics and artificial intelligence. You’ll gain practical experience and a solid foundation in computing and statistics, building the technical and professional skills that employers need.

IELTS

English language requirements

As well as IELTS (listed above), we also accept other English language qualifications. This includes TOEFL iBT, Pearson PTE, GCSE, IB and O level English. Check our English language policies and equivalencies for further details.

For presessional English or one-year foundation courses, you must take IELTS for UKVI to meet visa regulations.

If you need support to meet the required level, you may be able to attend a Presessional English for Academic Purposes (PEAP) course. Our Centre for English Language Education is accredited by the British Council for the teaching of English in the UK.

If you successfully complete your presessional course to the required level, you can then progress to your degree course. This means that you won't need to retake IELTS or equivalent.
