If you want to understand how economies really work, our BSc Economics and Econometrics gives you the tools to do it. By combining the foundations of economics with advanced statistical and mathematical models, you’ll learn how to test theories against real-world data and make predictions that matter. These skills are the backbone of modern decision-making, whether in business, government or finance.

You’ll study core areas of economics while also tailoring your degree through optional modules on topics such as international trade, financial economics and labour economics. This flexibility means you can explore different fields and discover where your strengths and interests lie.

How you will learn

The majority of teaching is delivered through lectures, tutorials, seminars and computer laboratory classes.

We aim to provide a learning environment that will enrich your life and live up to the ideal of a global education. You will engage directly in our common pursuit of cutting-edge, policy relevant and curiosity-driven research.

Economists study the world around them by applying both mathematical and statistical methods. You will be required to learn both to ensure you have the most up to date skills.

The final year dissertation module provides you with the opportunity to complete an independent research project on a topic of your choice. Under the guidance of a dissertation tutor, you will gain experience of the research process and a range of skills that will enhance your academic profile and CV.

During each semester you will be examined on the modules you have taken. Except for the dissertation in the third year (which is a coursework assessment), modules typically have exam-based assessment at the end of the semester (or year), and some have seminar or essay-based elements, including group work.

Contact time and study hours

You will have at least the following hours of timetabled contact a week through lectures, seminars, tutorials, computer classes and supervisions.

Applied Economics

In this module, you’ll explore trends in long run economic growth and globalisation. You’ll gain an understanding of how this has led to dramatic changes in the relative wealth of nations over the last 500 years. We will then ask two key questions: why have modern economic growth started in some places rather than others? And while have some countries been able to catch up, while others have not? These investigations will improve our understanding of why some countries are much richer than others and will give us some important insights on how to promote sustained growth in developing countries.

We will then turn to the economics of globalisation. This will look at the gains from trade, addressing debates regarding free trade and protectionism. You'll consider the movement of capital and migrant workers, looking at the causes of international mobility and the impact on both sending and receiving economies. Particular attention will be given to the rise of China in the world economy, to European economic integration and to potential deglobalisation.

Introduction to Econometrics

Master the statistical methods essential for economic data analysis. This module covers everything from distribution theory to regression models, providing a solid foundation in the mathematical techniques used to solve economic problems.

Introduction to Macroeconomics

Discover the big picture of the economy with this introductory macroeconomics course. Focus on the cyclical patterns of aggregate output and the interplay of real and monetary factors. Learn basic models, particularly dynamic general equilibrium modelling tools, and apply them to both theoretical and practical situations. Develop your analytical and communication skills through essays and presentations.

Introduction to Microeconomics

Dive into the world of microeconomics, exploring how firms and households make decisions in various market conditions. You'll learn the fundamentals, apply them to real-world scenarios and develop analytical skills through maths and diagrams. Engage in discussions and tutorials to enhance your understanding and communication skills.

Mathematical Economics

In this module, you’ll develop a sound basis in the fundamentals of mathematical methods used in economics. You’ll learn to represent economic problems as mathematical problems and to solve them. You’ll learn to apply mathematical techniques in an appropriate manner.

Statistical Methods

This module will introduce you to fundamental statistical concepts. You’ll be introduced to the ideas behind regression analysis through simple linear regression. You’ll learn to apply statistical and graphical techniques in an appropriate manner. You’ll also be introduced to data analysis using Excel. You’ll be expected to complete a series of tasks and solve assignments designed to familiarise you with common challenges faced by professional economists in a business environment and in academia.

Understand the economics of global integration and policy coordination. This module examines EU policies, international trade and the roles of major global institutions like the World Trade Organization (WTO) and International Monetary Fund (IMF), offering insights into the economic impacts of international cooperation.

Applied Econometrics

Learn the theory and practice of econometric methods, focusing on regression analysis. Apply these techniques to real-world economic situations using specialist software and develop your empirical analysis skills through hands-on exercises and tutorials.

Applied Econometrics II

Focus on time-series data analysis and policy evaluation methods. Learn to identify and estimate causal effects using econometric software. Enhance your understanding of regression techniques and critically evaluate published empirical research.

Econometric Theory I

This module generalises and builds upon the econometric techniques covered in the year one module, Mathematical Economics and Econometrics. This will involve introducing a number of new statistical and econometric concepts, together with some further development of the methodology that was introduced in year one. The multivariate linear regression model will again provide our main framework for analysis.

Econometric Theory II

Learn to analyse economic time series using advanced statistical techniques. ��ԭ�� the theoretical properties of time series models and methods for forecasting. Understand the behaviour of economic time series and their implications for empirical modelling.

Macroeconomic Theory

Dive into both fundamental and applied aspects of macroeconomic theory. ��ԭ�� modern theories of expectations, economic dynamics and short-run fluctuations. Understand the classical and Keynesian approaches to aggregate supply and demand.

Microeconomic Theory

Build on your first-year microeconomics knowledge with intermediate topics like general equilibrium analysis, welfare economics and game theory. Analyse the strategic behaviour of firms and develop your analytical skills through diagrams and mathematical techniques.

Development Economics

Explore the economic challenges faced by developing countries. ��ԭ�� topics like poverty, fertility, migration and agricultural markets. Analyse key policy issues and apply relevant economic theories to real-world problems.

Environmental and Resource Economics

Examine environmental issues from an economic perspective. ��ԭ�� market failures, environmental policy instruments and the valuation of environmental benefits. Analyse topics like the EU Emissions Trading System, fisheries and biodiversity.

Experimental and Behavioural Economics

The module aims to prompt thinking about economics as an empirical science and what that entails. It will introduce you to attempts to relax conventional assumptions such as unlimited rationality and own-payoff maximisation. It will provide a foundation knowledge relating to the design and implementation of appropriate experimental tests of economic theories and will enhance your presentation and communications skills.

Financial Economics

Learn the theoretical concepts related to risk allocation by financial institutions. Apply these concepts to analyse financial and banking crises. Understand investor behaviour and the role of financial markets in risk allocation.

Industrial Economics

Analyse the organisation of firms and industries, focusing on competition and market structures. ��ԭ�� firm behaviour in various markets, including price discrimination, vertical integration and advertising. Understand government regulation of industries.

International Trade

Understand the core theories and policies of international trade. Analyse trade patterns, gains from trade and government trade policy instruments like tariffs and quotas. ��ԭ�� the role of international trade agreements and their impact on global trade.

Labour Economics

Examine the economics of the labour market, focusing on theories, empirical evidence and government policy. Analyse the UK labour market and compare it with other developed economies. Understand the relationship between theory, evidence and policy.

Monetary Economics

Explore the foundations of monetary economics, covering topics like money, financial markets, and central banking. ��ԭ�� recent debates and controversies in monetary policy and develop a comprehensive understanding of monetary economics.

Political Economy

Explore the intersection of economics and politics. ��ԭ�� how political and institutional factors influence economic variables and vice versa. Understand modern literature in political economy and apply economic techniques to political science.

Public Sector Economics

Advanced Experimental and Behavioural Economics

The aims of the module are to develop your understanding of experimental economics and the main approaches of behavioural economics. It will illustrate different types of experiment that can be undertaken in economics and enable you to understand their designs and purposes, and to assess their strengths and weaknesses.

Advanced Financial Economics

This module covers:

saving, focusing on how agents make intertemporal decisions about their savings and wealth accumulation
saving puzzles and household portfolios, focusing on credit markets and credit markets' imperfections, and why do households hold different kinds of assets
asset allocation and asset pricing, focusing on intertemporal portfolio selection, asset pricing and the equity premium puzzle

Advanced Industrial Economics

Advanced Mathematical Economics

Advanced Microeconomics

Advanced Public Economics

Analyse the role of government in the economy, focusing on tax and welfare policies, social insurance and public goods. ��ԭ�� empirical research on current policy issues like inequality and poverty. Develop informed policy judgements and understand the impact of government actions.

Econometrics Dissertation B

An independent research project, involving the application of techniques of economic analysis to a self-chosen research topic and the writing of an economics research paper. Guidance will be provided on writing an undergraduate dissertation in economics.

The purpose of the Dissertation is for you to demonstrate familiarity with a particular area of economics and apply economic analysis to address a specific research question (or questions). You may choose the same research question you worked on for Dissertation A, in which case your analysis for Dissertation B should a significant extension of your earlier work.

Alternatively, you may pick another research question subject to their supervisor’s approval. The Dissertation must include a contribution that is your own (i.e. not just a summary of the ideas of others). In many cases, your contribution will be a piece of empirical or theoretical analysis, applying techniques you have acquired over your degree programme or during your dissertation research to look in depth at a specific issue. In some cases, you may undertake an analytic literature survey in which case your contribution would be to bring the literature together in a new way and derive implications or lessons.

Numerical Methods in Economics

Learn programming tools widely used in economics. ��ԭ�� numerical methods like differentiation, integration and optimisation. Apply these methods to economic and financial problems using software like Python and Jupyter Notebook.

Notes for applicants

We are looking for students who have the ability and motivation to benefit from our courses, and who will make a valued contribution to the department and the university. Candidates for full-time admission are considered on the basis of their UCAS application.

When considering your application, we will look for evidence that you will be able to fulfil the objectives of the course and achieve the standards required. We will take into account a range of factors additional to, and in some cases instead of, formal exam results.

Selection of those applicants will be based upon a combination of the candidate's academic record and an assessment of all the information provided in their UCAS application, their academic reference and their personal statement.

For pre-sessional English, or one-year foundation courses, you must take a Secure English Language Test (SELT) that is recognised by UK Visa and Immigration. This is a requirement for visas for these programmes.

If you need support to meet the required level, you may be able to attend a Presessional English for Academic Purposes (PEAP) course. Our Centre for English Language Education is accredited by the British Council for the teaching of English in the UK.

If you successfully complete your presessional course to the required level, you can then progress to your degree course. This means that you won't need to retake IELTS or equivalent.

International students must have valid UK immigration permissions for any courses or study period where teaching takes place in the UK. Placements and internships

The Faculty of Social Sciences runs an exclusive placements programme of term-time opportunities across all years of study. There are both paid and volunteer opportunities at local, national and even international level, across a wide range of organisations and businesses.

Many students take part in internships during their studies. These are found by you but there is support via the Careers and Employability Service and the Nottingham Economics and Finance Society (NEFS).
