Current Research

Roda's research is mainly in the area of global sociology with a focus on migration, race and inequalities. Focusing on migrants, refugees, internally displaced persons and victims of human trafficking, her empirical work and publications to date have been mainly driven by the concern to expose the ideological assumptions that frame discourses of inclusion and exclusion, and the extent to which they reveal (racialised) hierarchies of human worth. Roda has worked closely with non-governmental organisations, migrant support organisations and faith communities at local, national and international levels.

Recent projects include the following:

  • ESRC/GCRF funded study (as PI): 'Combating Human Trafficking: The role of NGOs in the fight against Human Trafficking In Zimbabwe' December 2019 - February 2022)
  • BA funded study (as CI): 'Disabled Refugee students Included and Visible in Education (DRIVE): Challenges and opportunities in three African countries' (March 2020 - August 2022)
  • UKRI/GCRF funded study, '(as CI) 'Internally Displaced Persons and COVID-19: Leveraging local low cost COVID-19 solutions in informal settlements in Zimbabwe' (August 2020 - February 2022).

Roda would be particularly interested in supervising research students with a focus on migration, race, ethnicity and inequalities.
